Our Toddler’s Bedtime Routine

It really shocks me when I hear so many parents saying that they don’t read their children stories before bed, or any other time of day for that matter. I wouldn’t have it any other way, my little one loves books & I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with the fact we’ve read to him since, well, before he was born…

When I was pregnant with Theo, myself & the Mr would read to him every night when we went to bed, even though he was in my tummy, we were firm believers that he could hear us & responded well to our voices. Reading books out loud was just an easier way to talk to him, without being stumped with what to say.

Call it chance or coincidence, but the one book we would repeatedly read him, is & has been for a long while, one of his favorites. I like to think it’s because he learnt the rhythm of the words through us reading it to him & he picked up on it when he was out & about in the world.

Theo’s bedtime routine, has been & will remain the same for the forseeable future because it works so well, for him & for us.

He starts his bedtime routine at about 6.50pm / 7.00pm.

We take him upstairs, brush his teeth, wash his face, get him dressed into his pjs & read him 3 – 4 stories (depending on the length). Then he helps his Daddy (or me if he’s at work) switch off his light & see if his dinosaurs & stars have come out (glow in the dark stickers). He gives us both (or again, just me if the Mr’s in work) a cuddle & we ask him if he’s had a nice day & various other questions that only really need a yes or no answer & we give him a kiss, lay him in bed, tuck him in & sing him 2 or 3 songs before saying goodnight & leaving the room, blowing a kiss on the way out. He normally blows a kiss just as we’re closing the door & that’s him down to bed. He’s normally asleep within 5-10 minutes of us leaving the room with maybe the odd chatter after we’ve gone, but normally it’s just silence.

When he’s in a big boy bed, it might go slightly differently – we will probably read him books in bed rather than on our laps, or at least one in his bed so he’s settled, but it’s far too difficult to lean over the cot at the moment, so it works really well with him snuggled on one of our laps. We take it in turns every night to read stories so if & when we have another one, he’s used to only one of us reading & hopefully wont get too picky with who he wants to read to him.

I can’t help but feel without the winding down of a quiet story time, he might not sleep as well, but he’s always out like a light by 7.10pm & he doesn’t wake until between 8.30am – 9.30am & he’s been the same since he was around 5 / 6 weeks old.

So there you have it, our simple yet effective bed time routine.

I’d love to hear your bedtime routines for your little ones & what other things you do compared to me, so drop a comment below. 🙂

Home Decor, Toddler Style.

Hello!!

A few days back the hubby-to-be & I were talking about home decor & I was rambling on about how I can’t wait to move & finally decorate somewhere! The house we’ve been living in for the past nearly two years is rented & magnolia, everywhere. Classic rental property. I actually like having light walls, I love to give rooms a pop of colour with accessories & colour them that way…I find it much more fun. Plus I know if I change my mind in 6 months time, it’s easy to just swap out some wall art or cushion covers for new ones.

Anyway, I decided that even though we only probably have 6 months left here, I’d take the time to start adding a bit of colour, now the Christmas decorations have been put away, so that for the remaining time we’re here it won’t just feel like we’re still living out of boxes. Silly I know, because what’s the point, but I’m a woman & I’m weird, so that’s how it is. 😉

IMG_0956Back to the subject matter….I was looking at different print sizes / canvas’ online because I want to get some of my photos printed out & displayed, (I have so many backed up on the laptop not being used or looked at & it gets me down sometimes) & I saw a canvas that looked like someone had just taken a canvas, put a load of sellotape over the top of it in a random fashion & splatted paint on it. I looked at it & thought, you know what….I’ve got some small canvas’ laying around in a bag that I’ve had for about a year & not done anything with, so I thought I’d have a go, but toddler style!!

So, I set to work, cutting out shapes from sellotape to make a train, because our little man Theo loves trains. I finished the train with a bit of a gap at the bottom of the canvas & thought I’d put his name across the bottom to fill the space. We covered the floor like we normally do & put him in some old clothes & essentially let him go wild with paints. He had a great time, finger painting & painting with a brush, mixing all his colours & doing what he wanted. As soon as the first colours went onto the canvas it started to look really awesome & the more that went on & got smushed around the more excited I got to see the outcome.

And here it is: *don’t mind his girly ‘craft time’ cover all*

IMG_0986I really love it, I think it’s a great little way to get your toddler involved in decorating, it’s a win win situation really, because he loved it, I love the outcome & it’s something he can look at & know he did. I want to do one for the living room too, not a train I might add, but it’s a great, cheap way of adding a pop of colour to your walls & involving the little one as well. I’ll no doubt post pictures of any others I do, so keep an eye out for that.

So there we go, home decor, toddler style! – I hope you enjoyed it.

Hello Everyone!!

Today I thought I’d just do a little update post for you all to let you know a little about what I’ve been up to in the new year.

To be honest, I’ve not done too much! I’ve started my new years resolutions, which were;

1, Lose weight / eat right / get fit & healthy.

2. Get organised

3. Have more ‘me’ time

4. Try new things…

So, as I said, I’ve already started back on my healthy lifestyle plan, it’s going well so far, but I’m making sure I just ease myself back into it rather than jumping straight from my very *cough* unhealthy Christmas into a super healthy lifestyle again, because I know I would fail myself miserably. *I’m following Slimming World*

I’ve also started to get a bit more organised too, we took down all the Christmas decorations *sob* a few days back & we did a bit of a spring clean at the same time. We’re trying to get everything organised for when we move away this year anyway, so any little things we can throw out or put in storage is a massive bonus.

Having more ‘me’ time is proving difficult, mostly because I’m rubbish at setting aside time for myself, I always find something else to do rather than just relaxing, but as most of you will know, having a toddler & having a house to run makes ‘me’ time a thing of the past. I’m working on it though & I’m promising myself a lovely relaxing bath tomorrow night with one of my Lush bath bombs that I got for Christmas. *well done hubby to be* 😉

Trying new things is a hard one, but I’m gonna make sure I put in the effort to try new things this year, even if it’s food that I swear I don’t like without trying it, or going somewhere or doing something out of my comfort zone….I’ve promised myself to at least try anyway.

Other than these things, I’ve not been up to much…I will, however, be posting on here more regularly (another promise I’ve made myself) so look out for my posts. 🙂

In other news, I’m starting to get my photography page back on the go *click here* so please go & check that out & ‘like’ the page to keep up to date with new photos being added & little treats that will be popping up here & there. I realise it’s pretty blank at the moment because I’ve deleted most of my content so I can start fresh, but it will be filling up in no time…

Speak to you soon, Kate, xo

New Years Eve Sleepover

Hi all & happy new years / eve!!

Are you all ready to see in the New Year tonight?

Me & my little family are spending the day & evening at Laurie’s sisters house. Tonight will be the first time Theo has ever had a sleep over & he’s having it with one of his cousins in his room.

Hopefully it will all go well & we can do it again a few times before our holiday in May when they’ll be sharing a room together. (I’m so excited for it!!!)

I’ve had a lovely year this year & I’m even more excited for next year! There’s lots on the horizon for me & my little family, including a big move, the start of nursery for Theo & hopefully a lot of little adventures for us too.

I’m excited to take you along on our journey & I hope you’ll enjoy it too.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!
I hope you all have a fantastic evening & make lots of memories in the new year. Stay safe & I wish you all the health & happiness in the world. 💗

Christmas is over…

Hey Everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas, were spoilt rotten (not just with gifts) & that you got all that you wished for.

I had my best Christmas so far this year, I had the most wonderful day watching our little cub open all of his presents & we had a gorgeous Christmas dinner cooked by my hubby-to-be, it was a completely stress free, indulgent, happy day & I’m one happy lady! 😀

Although the Christmas decorations are all still up & sparkling, I can’t help but feel that after boxing day, Christmas is well & truly over. However, I wait for as long as I possibly can before I take down the decorations because I just think that the house looks so bare & boring without them & I must admit, I will definitely be missing the tree once it’s been taken down. It’s just so lovely to look at every morning when we come downstairs & I think the living room will feel so empty without it. Sad, I know. 😉

Anyway, I just wanted to write a quick little blog to say, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas & to wish you all a fantastic & Happy New year!! I hope you’ve got your resolutions ready. 😉

Body Jewellery Shop Product Review!

I was very excited to be sent some samples of some ear piercing jewellery from bodyjewelleryshop.com for review. I’ve purchased many products from here before because they’re always really good quality & there’s so many products to choose from, this occasion was no different. All three pieces I chose are lovely, clean, sturdy pieces of jewellery. They came in a small bubble wrapped envelope, packaged neatly in a little sealed bag. The first thing I got was a set of heart-shaped studs (ER06 – CC), which are so gorgeous & sparkly. I love wearing studs & so these are ideal for every day use. They don’t irritate my ears at all & they seem to be made really well. Although they are aimed more towards lobe piercings, the ones I have up the side of my ear were done at a random hairdressers all at the same time with a piercing gun, so they are the same size hole as a lobe piercing, I will wear them there for the most part because they’re such a lovely size.

The second thing I got was a pink, steel internally threaded labaret / tragus stud (INLAB-PK), it fits my ear really well, I struggle with other places to get it just right because I have quite small ears but on bodyjewelleryshop.com you can pick wich gauge & length you need (I got 1.2mm x 6mm), which is really helpful. The tragus stud is stainless steel with a little pink stud, it’s so pretty & really sparkles when it catches the light.

The third & final thing I got was a silver & steel helix bar (TEP28), it’s a lovely feather shaped earring which unfortunately doesn’t fit where I wanted it to be used for, but I may use it as a stand in for when I get bored with my tragus stud if it will fit.

As I say, they are all lovely pieces, well made & beautiful. They are also really reasonably priced & there’s so much variety to choose from. I thoroughly recommend this website for all of your ear piercing jewellery needs.

Blogmas 3 – Going Blonde & Why I Wen’t Back Again…

Recently I started on a quest to go blonde (again). Every so often I get the urge to dye my hair & it’s normally blonde that I settle on. I convince myself every time that if I change my hair dramatically then it will somehow change the rest of me too & maybe I’ll be a new woman. Obviously, this isn’t the case. Every time, I do my hair blonde & I can’t get it the exact shade I want it, so I dye it back brunette…

This time, however, I got it done over quite a long period of time (for me) & in the end, I woke up from the madness I was in & I realised that, changing my hair colour won’t change who I am, or how I do things…It will just change my hair colour. Now, this may seem like a pretty obvious thing to announce, but to a lot of people, it’s how they feel.

So, I am now back a brunette & I’ve not been happier with myself. I’ve vowed never to go back blonde, because it just isn’t me. I feel comfortable as a brunette, because that’s how I was born to be, I may have had bright white blonde hair when I was tiny, but it doesn’t mean that it will suit me now. I know that I will always be a little bit late for everything, no matter how much I plan or try & make sure I’m early. I know I’ll always prefer to wear comfy clothes than get up early every day to pick out a nice pretty outift that no one will see & I know that even if my hair was a different colour, I still wouldn’t have the extra time in my day to style it nicely. I am me & I do things the way I do them, because that’s the only way I can do them (for now at least).

I suppose this is more of a post for me, than for anyone elses benefit, but I just wanted to put it out there for anyone who may be thinking of doing the same – don’t. I wish now I’d only gone a lighter or darker brunette, but we live & learn…

Here’s a few pictures of my journey…(if you’re interested)
